Doodle Activity: Draw Your Favorite Letter – Fun Sketchbook Exercise

What’s your favorite letter of the alphabet? Think about it – maybe it’s the first letter of your name, or maybe it’s just a letter that you like saying out loud (I like saying “X” (‘EHKSSS’ and ‘Zeeee’) – those are fun to say.

For this Daily Doodle exercise – take your favorite letter and draw it really big in your sketchbook. Have it go across the whole page. I went with the letter “L”.

It’s best to start with pencil and just roughly draw out the letter, as large as you can. It’s ok if you have a lot of sketchy lines – just keep moving your pencil, pressing lightly to block out the letter on the page. Once you think you got it – then go over it with a marker. You can always erase the lines, but I prefer to keep them in – since I like the sketchy quality of the drawing.

Then, using pencil (or you could go right to crayons, colored pencils or markers) start writing words and drawing things that start with that letter. For me, I love the letter L because my wife and my two boys all start with that letter (Lavinia, Luke and Lochlan). I also like the words Love and Little Pulp (my company name). I also drew things like lolipops, lilacs, a light bulb, lion and a lemon.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are new to daily doodling and/or if you are not confident that you are able to draw things that start with the letter – think about it this way – it’s your drawing, you don’t have to show it to anyone (but if you’d like to show it to me, I’d love to see it and I won’t judge you at all – I have been drawing for over 45 years and I still feel insecure about my drawings).

Then I decorated the page some more with Lines – which also starts with the letter L. Once you commit to do an activity like this, you’ll be super surprised with all the things you can think of that start with your favorite letter. Here is my finished page from My Daily Doodle Book.

I hope you will give this activity a try – it’s a lot of fun. If you do, please send me a pic, I’d love to see what you came up with. Thanks for reading. Have a great time drawing…
